What is brilliant about Bonny Doon?

Have you had the opportunity to get your hands on a Bonny Doon hydraulic press? How about the amazing bracelet-forming kit? Catalog In Motion® is your chance to see Bonny Doon tools and equipment in action and learn from the experts. Who are the experts, you ask? That’d be Phil Poirier and David Reynolds, who will be showing off techniques in the showroom, during the hydraulic forming class and at the free seminar Innovative Techniques with the Hydraulic Press.

The Experts

• G. Phil Poirier—Master jeweler Phil Poirier has spent 35 years as a goldsmith and 24 years designing and engineering tools for the jewelry industry, specifically for hydraulic presses. He is the current owner/operator of Bonny Doon Engineering in Taos, NM. www.gphilpoirier.com

• David Reynolds—During an apprenticeship under master goldsmith G. Phil Poirier, David Reynolds learned everything from delicate goldsmithing to machining various types of stainless steel. Today, he manufactures and machines all tooling and accessories for the Bonny Doon line.

The Opportunities

• Class—There is still space available in the Hydraulic Forming class, where David Reynolds explores hydraulic die-forming, a process that empowers the artist with 20 tons of strength, increased productivity and the potential to create in ways other methods cannot.

• Seminars—Showing off the many techniques of metal forming available using a hydraulic press, the Innovative Techniques with the Hydraulic Press seminar by Phil Poirier goes from simple tasks such as silhouette die-forming to complex techniques such as deep-drawing.

• Showroom—Phil and David will both be in the showroom from open to close all four days of the show, presenting the complete line of Bonny Doon tooling, answering your questions and showing off a few brand-new Bonny Doon products that will be making their debut at Catalog in Motion.

The Products

• The Bonny Doon Hydraulic Press (http://tinyurl.com/y9oernk)—Learn what Bonny Doon can do for you! It works with the same energy, inventiveness and boundary-breaking philosophy as G. Phil Poirier, who made his first press using a homemade form and a 5-ton ram because he simply “needed a bigger hammer.” With the strong arm of machinery found in presses and the broad array of tooling made exclusively by Bonny Doon, there’s virtually no limit to what the metalsmith can do!

• Bracelet-Forming Kit (http://tinyurl.com/yeg3rvq)—form perfect synclastic oval cuffs with no kinks or bends. Quick, simple and easy to repeat! See the video below:

• Silhouette Die Kit (http://tinyurl.com/ycvezuc)—form a variety of component shapes for your designs consistently and accurately with steel silhouette die plates. See the video below:

What is show-stopping in the showroom?

What do Swanstrom cutters, Bonny Doon hydraulic presses, Foredom® flex shafts, Smith® torches, Fretz hammers and Friedrich Dick files have in common? Three words: Catalog In Motion®.

At Catalog in Motion, the biggest names in jewelry tools and equipment come together under one roof to explore, discuss and discover new possibilities. A great example of this is a unique Mobius strip pendant Bill Fretz created at last year’s show (shown above).

This pendant started as a sheet of 18-gauge brass. On its journey to completion, a Durston shear, Bonny Doon Mark III hydraulic press, Swanstrom disc cutter, Smith torch, German saw frame, ring stick, nylon hammer and Friedrich Dick files were used. The final step in shaping it happened at Bill’s bench in the showroom, where he used the Fretz insert hammer (112-476) and insert stakes (112-696) to give it the continuous curve of a Mobius strip.

It’s all about collaboration in the showroom, where it all comes together—the tools to clean and polish the pendant, the findings to complete it and even the display to show it off are all at Catalog in Motion for you to see and try for yourself. And the best part? Experts like Bill Fretz are there to answer your questions and discuss new ideas.

The Catalog In Motion showroom is full of big names and big opportunities. Come see what we mean when we say a catalog can come to life!
